Last week we Jews celebrated the holiday of Purim, which commemorates a story, from the Book of Esther, that took place in ancient Persia (which is now Iran). Queen Esther and her cousin, Mordecai, foiled a plot by Haman, an advisor to the king, to exterminate all Jews in the kingdom.
Mordecai had angered Haman by failing to show proper respect. Haman sought to get even by hanging Mordecai and annihilating all the Jews.
But Haman wound up hanged on the gallows he had intended for Mordecai.
The way the holiday is celebrated is an example of what’s been called the common theme of many Jewish holidays: “They tried to kill us; we survived; Let’s eat!”
The main food associated with Purim is Hamantaschen, triangular pastries filled with lekvar (plum or prune butter) or other preserves; their shape is said to mimic Haman’s hat.
It’s not a solemn holiday, and many aspects appeal to children: helping to make the Hamantaschen, dressing up in costume to depict the characters and acting out the story, and using groggers (noisemaking devices used to drown out the name of Haman whenever it is mentioned during the telling of the story). Many Jewish families celebrate Purim without ever setting foot in a synagogue.
The Book of Esther is also known as the Scroll of Esther, and the Hebrew word for “scroll” is megillah, so the ceremonial reading of it is called reading the Megillah. This is whence comes the slang term megillah or magilla, which means “the whole (long and detailed) story,” as in “Spare me the whole megillah and just get to the point already!”
The Magilla Gorilla Show was a Hanna-Barbera cartoon show that aired in the ‘60s.
Anyway, Purim (even a week after) is an occasion for me to share two videos that feature Donald Trump. The first is Rabbi Pinchas Taylor’s impersonation of Donald Trump telling the story of Purim; I don’t think you have to be Jewish to enjoy it:
I especially like how “Trump” asks if he’s pronounced “L’Chaim!” correctly, and then adds, as an aside, “I don’t drink, by the way.”
The next one is far more serious. It’s not really about Purim, except that it deals with those who, like Haman, would like to annihilate all Jews. It’s a video on Instagram of the real Donald Trump explaining how terrorism is perpetuated and how, as Golda Meir once said [paraphrased], there will be peace only when the [so-called] “Palestinians” learn to love their own children more than they hate the Jews.

As you watch both of these, remember how the Dems/Libs/Progs/Commies — while they support the despicable Jew-hatred and anti-Americanism spouted by their own members (“The Squad”) and lament the arrest and planned deportation of equally vile Hamas supporter Mahmoud Khalil — never tire of branding Donald Trump as an “anti-Semite.” Yeah, Right!
Au contraire, if Bill Clinton could be characterized as “America’s First Black President,” Donald Trump can certainly be viewed as the closest thing so far to “America’s First Jewish President.”
